One of the best aspects of living in the Sarasota / Siesta Key area is the weather – sunshine and blue skies are abundant most of the year. Escaping the snow and cold during winter is very attractive for visitors, even if locals think the weather is a bit chilly. There is no bad time to visit this area – but depending on your temperature preference, some months may be more comfortable than others. This article breaks down the average weather conditions by month so visitors can plan their vacations and activities accordingly.
What Can You Expect from the Weather on Your Vacation
January: Many people think that the perfect Siesta Key weather happens in January, with pleasant temperatures and little rainfall. Sarasota’s “winter” showcases daytime highs of approximately 72°F, with nighttime lows dropping into the mid-50’s. On average, we see rainfall only a few days, if any. If you are looking to relax in pleasant temperatures and risk minimal rainfall, January is an excellent month to visit. Bring light layers to stay comfortable as the sun goes in and out.
February: The weather in February is generally ideal, featuring temperatures very similar to January. However, February typically delivers less rainfall overall, making it a very pleasant time to visit. This idyllic scenario is especially attractive given how miserably cold February can be around the country. If you are visiting, bring layers and light jackets or sweatshirts for when the sun goes down.
March: During the month of March, daytime temperatures warm but remain very pleasant and comfortable. You can expect about 77°F during the day, cooling to 60°F in the evenings and mornings. It rains about 6 days on average. Even though our daytime temperatures are approaching “hot”, sweatshirts are still recommended for your evening beach walks.
April: Springtime in Sarasota looks a lot like summer across the country, with April showcasing temperatures hovering around 81°F during the day, and 65°F once the sun goes down. Historically, April brings very little rain, so you can expect very dry conditions. With the strength of the sun’s rays and temps in the 80’s, you should be comfortable in traditional “summer clothes.”
May: This month drives summer conditions into high gear, with daily temperatures rising to 87°F and only cooling to 70°F overnight. The daily rainfall will increase beginning in May, and visitors can expect hot weather with the occasional rainstorm. Summer clothes, such as t-shirts, shorts and sandals are your best bet. If you are not accustomed to Florida sun, consider light clothing that will keep you covered and protected.
June: Summer goes into full swing in June, with daily temperatures around 88°F, dipping only to the mid-70s when the sun goes down. Rainfall begins to occur more frequently, with precipitation occurring approximately 14 days per month. While rain can occur at any time of the day, afternoon storms are the most common.
July: This month is characterized by very high temperatures and heavy rains. If you visit in July, you are likely to encounter 90°F during the day, and a balmy 77°F overnight. Rainfall increases to 19 days per month, and visitors should always be prepared for a sudden storm – a small poncho is a great idea.
August: Summer continues full force into August, with identical temperature conditions as July. However, you can expect rain at least 22 days per month, making it a wet month to visit – although some love the daily relief of the rain! Bring summer clothes that dry off quickly, just in case you get caught in a sudden deluge.
September: Despite cooling trends across the country, daily temperatures in Sarasota remain around 90°F during the day and only cool to 75°F when the sun goes down. When biking or beach walking, you may want to have a poncho, with 18 days of rain expected historically.
October: Temperatures begin to ease off in October, as “autumn” ushers in days in the mid-80’s and dropping into the high 60’s overnight. Days are once again ideal for activities, and rainfall diminishes dramatically, back to only about 7 days per month. If you are visiting from another state, October resembles a beautiful early summer day.
November: Snowbirds begin to return to Siesta Key in November for a reason, as temperatures drop back into the 70’s during the days and the 60’s at night. With only 5 average days of rain, days are considerably drier from now on. You’ll want to go back to springtime clothing and light layers.
December: Christmas under 75°F blue skies may seem different, but the weather is certainly beautiful! It will be chilly overnight, but precipitation will be minimal, providing perfect conditions for your vacation.
