Each year, starting October 1, regions across Florida once again host one of nature’s most iconic spectacles — the return of the bald eagle for the annual nesting season. These majestic birds are more than just a national emblem symbolizing freedom – they are a vital part of Florida’s natural ecosystem, especially in regions like Sarasota, where nesting activity is strong.

The Comeback of the Bald Eagle

The bald eagle was once on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss, hunting, and pesticide use. The bald eagle has made a remarkable recovery over the past few decades. Thanks to federal protections and conservation efforts, the bald eagle was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007. However, it remains protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which make it illegal to disturb nesting eagles or interfere with their habitat.

Florida is home to one of the largest populations of bald eagles in the continental United States, second only to Alaska. Sarasota County alone hosts dozens of active nests, and eagle pairs often return to the same nesting sites year after year. The nesting season runs from October 1 through May 15, peaking in the cooler winter months.

Where to See Bald Eagles in Sarasota

Bald eagle nests are large, highly visible structures — often five to six feet wide — typically built high in tall pine trees or near large bodies of water. In Sarasota, one of the most accessible and popular spots to potentially observe eagle activity is along the Legacy Trail. This 18.5-mile multi-use trail stretches from Sarasota to Venice and passes by several known nesting territories.

A few specific areas along the trail and adjacent preserves have become informal eagle-watching hotspots. Look for interpretive signs and viewing areas that may be set up by local conservation groups or park staff. Other eagle-friendly locations include Oscar Scherer State Park, Myakka River State Park, and Celery Fields, all of which offer ample opportunity for spotting these birds in flight or perched near their nests.

Rules for Observing Eagles Responsibly

Because the bald eagle remains a protected species, it’s critical to observe certain rules and guidelines during nesting season:

  • Stay at least 330 feet (100 meters) away from an active nest. This is the minimum distance recommended by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to prevent disturbance.
  • Do not use drones near nests. Drones are known to disturb or even displace nesting birds.
  • Avoid loud noises or sudden movements in nesting areas. Eagles are sensitive during the nesting season and may abandon their nests if they feel threatened.
  • Follow posted signs and trails. Many local parks and preserves mark eagle nesting areas and may temporarily close off sections during nesting season to protect the birds.
  • No feeding or baiting. Not only is this illegal, but it also disrupts the birds’ natural hunting behaviors and puts them at risk.

Breaking these rules can result in substantial fines and legal consequences. It is best to use caution when around these nests – keep your distance to keep eggs and chicks safe.

A Shared Responsibility

The local chapters of the Audubon Society and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regularly monitor nests, guide walking tours, and provide educational outreach. You can often find updates about active nests and viewing etiquette through these organizations’ websites or social media. (Click here to sign up for the February 2026 Eagle Nest Tour)
